- The President of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, visited UARX Space’s facilities today at the Porto do Molle technology park, coinciding with the imminent trip to California and subsequent launch of its orbital transfer vehicle, OSSIE, designed and manufactured entirely by this company in Nigrán. A milestone that he described as “a source of pride” and which will take the Galicia Calidade brand into space, while also placing Spain for the first time among the select group of five countries with the capacity to manoeuvre beyond the atmosphere.
- “Before, it seemed that you had to go to very faraway countries to do difficult things, things that seemed like science fiction a few years ago, and now it turns out that we do them here and send them all over the world and even into space,” he said.
- In this regard, the President, who was accompanied by the Minister of Economy and Industry, María Jesús Lorenzana, congratulated the company on turning Galician talent into a global benchmark that already has recognition from world-renowned agencies such as NASA.
- Accordingly, aware that the aerospace, security and defence sectors are strategic for internationalisation and the generation of high-skilled employment, Rueda reiterated the Xunta’s support for these sectors. In this regard, he pointed out that the Strategic Initiative for Security, Defence and Aerospace (IESDA) will allocate 183 million euros over five years with the aim of mobilising more than 900 million euros in public-private capital, always prioritising the development and manufacture of these solutions remaining in the territory.
- Within this line of continued support, the regional president stressed that this same week the Council authorised 40 million euros to attract major industrial projects in security, defence and aerospace to Galicia through Pre-Commercial Public Procurement, a pioneering measure across the country.
- “What we are aiming for are two objectives: that we talk about products that the market will need but does not yet have and therefore have to be manufactured, and that they are manufactured in Galicia,” Rueda explained. Thus, this programme will directly drive dual-technology projects —with civilian and defence applications— and one of the relevant criteria when selecting them is that they commit to manufacturing the products in the region, helping to keep Galicia’s innovation engine running and attracting new opportunities.
