- The Galician Institute for Economic Promotion (Igape) today hosted in Santiago the signing of the financing agreement for Seafood Legacy Spain S.L. for the development of a strategic sustainable aquaculture project in Burela (Lugo), based on advanced recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). The initiative, which Igape is supporting with a 5‑million‑euro loan, will drive the launch of the first salmon breeding plant in the Galician region, which will occupy a plot of nearly 20,000 m² in the port of Burela and is expected to create around one hundred direct and indirect jobs.
- The agreement was signed with the collaborating financial institutions (Banco Santander and Abanca) and the ICO. Thus, the Regional Ministry of Economy and Industry is contributing 8.5 million euros, in addition to the 3.5 million euros already provided by Xesgalicia. In total, the Xunta is allocating 33.5 million euros, of which the Regional Ministry of the Sea is contributing 25 million euros co‑financed by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF).
- Aquaculture is consolidating its position as one of the sectors with the greatest future potential for Galicia, both because of its roots in the maritime economy and its capacity to integrate innovation, technology and sustainability. In this context, the project promoted by Seafood Legacy is an important initiative to drive the modernisation of the sector and strengthen the region’s position as an international benchmark.
- The investment of more than 100 million euros reflects Seafood Legacy Spain’s firm commitment to Galicia, harnessing its know‑how, industrial ecosystem and leadership in the marine sphere. The project aims to develop a modern, efficient aquaculture activity with high added value, aligned with global challenges in terms of sustainability and food security.
- The signing of the agreement is a key milestone for the roll‑out of the initiative and will allow progress in the construction of a facility that will have a highly significant impact on the economy of the Mariña de Lugo area, through job creation and the revitalisation of the local productive fabric.
- The financing agreement was made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Regional Ministry of Economy and Industry of the Xunta de Galicia, through Igape and XesGalicia, together with the Official Credit Institute (ICO) and the financial institutions Banco Santander and Abanca, as an example of joint engagement by public and private institutions.
- The future facility will use RAS technology, which optimises water use, improves biosecurity and significantly reduces environmental impact compared with traditional aquaculture models. Once operational, the plant will help to strengthen the Galician aquaculture sector, foster regional economic development and consolidate a more innovative and sustainable production model.
- With this project, the Xunta de Galicia is reinforcing its commitment to driving strategic sectors such as aquaculture, promoting initiatives that combine innovation, sustainability and job creation, and helping to consolidate Galicia as a European benchmark in the blue economy.
